How to save the audio from YouTube

  1. Open the video on youtube.com or in the app.
  2. Tap Share, then Copy link. Short youtu.be links work too.
  3. Paste the link in the box above.
  4. Press Download. The MP3 saves straight to your device.

Quality you get

We take the best audio stream YouTube has, usually 128-160 kbps Opus or AAC, and convert to MP3 at LAME V0 (roughly 245 kbps variable). Converting once from the source stream avoids the quality loss of re-extracting from a compressed video file.

What will not work

  • Only public and unlisted videos. Private and age-restricted videos need a signed-in account.
  • Videos up to 30 minutes.
  • One video at a time. No playlists or channels.
  • Music is protected by copyright. Download only what you have the right to, such as your own uploads or Creative Commons material.

Questions

Is the audio quality actually better than other converters?

It is not re-encoded twice, which is the usual quality killer. YouTube stores audio separately from video, so we convert that stream once rather than pulling sound back out of a finished video file. The ceiling is still whatever YouTube stored.

Why is my MP3 smaller than the video?

Audio is a small fraction of a video file. A four minute song is roughly 4-8 MB as MP3 against 30-70 MB for the same clip at 1080p.

Can I get better than MP3?

MP3 is offered because it plays on everything. The underlying stream is often Opus, which is more efficient, but far fewer devices and car stereos support it.

Does this work for long videos like podcasts?

Up to 30 minutes. Longer recordings need a desktop tool.
